Why Digital Therapeutics Contribute to Mental Health Access & Equity

Lack of providers, long wait times for appointments, costs and other challenges can make it tough to access mental health care. Some of the communities most affected by mental health struggles are at the highest risk for not receiving care.

Overcoming care obstacles

Negative attitudes toward people living with mental health conditions are common in the U.S. One study showed that 63% of Black people believe that a mental health condition is a sign of personal weakness (Ward et al., 2014). Beyond stigma, there are many other factors that can affect access to quality care.

Social determinants of health can drive as much as 80% of health outcomes (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2019). These include transportation, proximity to a specialist, economic stability, and the availability of technology like smartphones, computers and Wi-Fi access.

“We need to find a way to successfully integrate new care options, like those offered by DTx, with existing treatments like psychotherapy or medications. More options advance care and improve patient wellbeing.”

— Avrim Fishkind, MD

Effective help at home

Digital therapeutic treatments can—and do—address gaps in behavioral health. At-home treatments supported by remote coaching and monitoring allow individuals to access care solutions when, where and how works best for them.

With Freespira, 86% of users were panic attack-free at the end of their 28-day program (Kaplan et al., 2020). And 88% said they would recommend Freespira (Tolin et al., 2017).
